Before
Someone would need to choose a show, look up a suitable quote from the relevant source, and copy the quote and speaker details. They would then format the message and post it to the team channel, repeating the process whenever a new quote was wanted.
How it works
- Randomly select one show from the predefined list when the playbook is run.
- Retrieve the corresponding quote, identify its character or speaker, and format the content with the show name.
- Publish the completed quote to the configured Slack channel.
Workflow details
- Random selection: When the playbook is run, it randomly chooses one show from The Simpsons, Game of Thrones, and Breaking Bad.
- Quote retrieval: The workflow calls the appropriate quote service for the selected show and retrieves a quote together with its character or speaker information.
- Message formatting: The quote is formatted with quotation marks, the speaker or character, and the selected show so that it is ready to share.
- Channel delivery: The prepared message is sent to the configured Slack channel as the final workflow action.
- Flexible reuse: The playbook is designed for fun team interactions and can be triggered manually, such as through a Slack command, or adapted for motivational quotes.
What changed
The show selection, quote lookup, message formatting, and Slack handoff now happen automatically in one run. The user only needs to initiate the playbook instead of coordinating the lookup and publishing steps.
Work removed
Choosing a show, searching the relevant quote source, copying the quote and speaker details, adding formatting and attribution, and manually posting the message to Slack.
Expected outcome
A conservative expectation is that each run removes at least one manual lookup, one formatting step, and one posting action while delivering one ready-to-read quote to the team channel.
