Before
Teams likely had to look up the domain's MX records periodically, review each mail-server IP in separate reputation and information services, and copy the findings into a message. They also had to distinguish reported servers from those without report history and manually share the completed results with the responsible team.
How it works
- On a recurring schedule, retrieve the MX servers associated with the configured domain.
- For each MX server IP, collect location and hostname information, check its abuse-report history, and determine whether a last report exists.
- Assemble the findings into a readable report and post the summary and detailed results to the team communication channel.
Workflow details
- Scheduled monitoring: The workflow runs on a recurring schedule, supporting regular checks of the MX servers associated with the configured domain rather than relying on occasional manual reviews.
- MX server discovery: Each run looks up the domain's MX records and collects the associated mail-server IP addresses for further analysis.
- Reputation and context checks: Every discovered IP is checked for abuse-report history, including total reports, the last reported time, abuse confidence score, and the number of distinct reporters. Additional IP information provides the hostname and geographic location where available.
- Conditional reporting: The workflow checks whether an IP has a recorded last report. It formats reported and unreported IPs differently, including the relevant reputation details for reported servers and explicitly indicating when no last report is available.
- Team delivery: The findings are assembled into a consolidated MX records report and posted to a communication channel, with the detailed results delivered as a threaded follow-up for review.
What changed
MX server discovery, per-IP reputation checks, contextual lookups, report-history validation, and report formatting now happen automatically on a schedule. The team receives the consolidated findings in a channel thread and can focus on reviewing reported or otherwise noteworthy servers.
Work removed
Manually running MX-record lookups, reviewing each server IP in reputation and location services, checking whether report history exists, copying server details into a report, and posting the completed findings to the team channel.
Expected outcome
Each scheduled run automates one MX-record lookup plus two per-server analysis checks, producing consistent coverage of all discovered MX servers without requiring a manual reporting cycle.
