Before
A security or support team member likely had to search for the user, inspect the account's enrolled factors, initiate the challenge, and repeatedly check its verification status. They then had to communicate the success or timeout outcome to the team separately.
How it works
- Receive the user's email address and locate the corresponding account and enrolled authentication factors.
- Send the MFA verification request and poll its status at 10-second intervals while the challenge remains active.
- Post a success notification when verification completes or a timeout notification when it does not complete within the configured window.
Workflow details
- Request intake and user lookup: The workflow receives a user's email address from an on-demand request, searches for the matching account, and identifies the user's enrolled authentication factors.
- Challenge initiation: It selects the relevant enrolled factor and sends a verification request so the user can respond to the MFA push challenge through their configured authenticator.
- Automated status monitoring: The workflow checks the verification transaction repeatedly, waiting 10 seconds between checks while the challenge remains unresolved and tracking the configured challenge timeout.
- Outcome handling: When the challenge succeeds, the workflow updates its status and posts a success notification. If the challenge does not complete within the allowed period, it follows the timeout path and posts a separate notification instead.
What changed
The full MFA challenge workflow now starts from a user's email address, performs the account and factor lookup automatically, monitors verification without repeated human checks, and delivers the outcome to Slack through a defined success or timeout path.
Work removed
Searching for the user by email, reviewing enrolled factors, initiating the verification request, checking the challenge status repeatedly, and manually posting the success or timeout notification.
Expected outcome
Each request automates the challenge workflow and up to three 10-second status checks within the configured 30-second monitoring window, while ensuring the team receives a clear completion or timeout notification.
