Before
A user would download the PDF, open it in a document reader, locate the relevant content, and manually copy the required text. Each request would require repeating these steps and determining the correct text range by hand.
How it works
- Receive a PDF URL and the requested start and end indexes.
- Download the document, extract text from each page, and select the specified range.
- Return the selected text and range when processing succeeds, or provide a failure response when it does not.
Workflow details
- Request intake: The workflow receives a PDF URL together with the starting and ending indexes that define which portion of the extracted text is needed.
- Document processing: It downloads the PDF and reads the document page by page using PDF text extraction, combining the available page text into a single result.
- Content selection: The workflow applies the requested start and end indexes to return only the relevant text segment instead of the entire document.
- Validation and delivery: It checks whether the processing step completed without an error, then returns the selected text along with the supplied index range; failed executions are routed to a failure response.
What changed
PDF text extraction and range selection now happen automatically from a single request. The requesting process receives the selected content and the indexes used, while unsuccessful processing is routed separately instead of requiring the user to diagnose the issue manually.
Work removed
Downloading the PDF, opening and reading its pages, extracting the text, locating the requested range, and copying the selected content into another process.
Expected outcome
For each request, the workflow can remove at least three recurring manual actions—downloading the file, extracting its text, and copying the required section—while delivering a consistent text result.
