Before
Operators likely had to respond to Vault events by retrieving the relevant secret and server details, checking replication status, and validating whether the request succeeded. They then had to interpret primary and secondary health conditions, remove duplicate error information, and manually notify the team in Slack.
How it works
- Receive a Vault webhook or emailhook event, retrieve the required secret, and prepare the server details.
- Request replication status, validate the HTTP result, process the response, and evaluate primary and secondary health conditions while deduplicating errors.
- Send the appropriate rich status or problem notification to the designated Slack channel.
Workflow details
- Trigger and data retrieval: The workflow starts when a webhook or emailhook event is received from HashiCorp Vault. It retrieves the relevant KV secret and prepares the Vault server details needed for the health check.
- Replication check: The automation requests the Vault cluster replication status and evaluates whether the HTTP request completed successfully, separating valid responses from unsuccessful ones.
- Health evaluation: Valid replication data is processed and assessed through conditional paths for issues affecting the Vault primary or secondary server. The workflow also deduplicates error information to support clearer reporting.
- Notification routing: Based on the health-check results, the workflow prepares rich Slack messages for the appropriate status or problem condition. Separate paths can notify the team about primary-server issues, secondary-server issues, or other outcomes identified during processing.
- Operational result: Vault health information is delivered to a designated Slack channel without requiring an operator to retrieve the status, interpret the response, and compose each notification manually.
What changed
Each incoming Vault event now initiates the status lookup, response validation, health evaluation, error deduplication, and Slack handoff automatically. Human operators receive the resulting status or problem message instead of performing the checks and assembling the notification themselves.
Work removed
Manually retrieving Vault secret and server details, checking replication status, validating HTTP success, reviewing primary and secondary health conditions, deduplicating error messages, and composing Slack notifications.
Expected outcome
For each incoming event, the workflow can replace at least one manual status lookup-and-notify cycle with an automated replication check and routed Slack notification.
