Automated Breach Detection and Password Remediation

Automated Breach Detection and Password Remediation

This automation performs scheduled scans of the company domain to identify email addresses exposed in known breaches, then initiates password remediation for affected accounts. It delivers the breach details and remediation activity to a designated Slack channel so security teams can act from a centralized notification.

Trigger

A scheduled trigger initiates a scan of the company domain for email addresses associated with known breaches.

Outcome

A Slack notification is posted with breach details and the password remediation activity performed for the affected accounts.

Before

Security staff likely had to launch domain scans on a recurring basis, review breach findings, and identify the affected directory accounts. They then had to generate or assign replacement passwords, force password changes, and manually communicate the findings and actions to the security team.

How it works

  1. A scheduler launches a recurring company-domain breach scan.
  2. The workflow checks whether the scan succeeded and returned findings, then extracts the breach details and processes each affected account for password remediation.
  3. Once processing is complete, it posts the findings and remediation context to the designated Slack channel.

Workflow details

  • Scheduled monitoring: A scheduler initiates domain scans on a configured recurring cadence, such as daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly, removing the need for analysts to launch each scan manually.
  • Breach validation: The workflow evaluates the scan response and continues only when the request succeeds and breach findings are present. It extracts the breach name, breach date, compromised data categories, and description for reporting.
  • Account remediation: For each processed breached account or finding, the workflow generates a runtime password value and updates the associated directory account while forcing a password change.
  • Incident reporting: After the remediation loop, the workflow sends a structured notification containing the breach information and scan context to the configured Slack channel.
  • Operational result: Security teams receive recurring breach visibility and remediation status without manually moving between breach data, directory administration, and team communications.

What changed

Breach scanning now starts automatically on a defined schedule, and successful findings are validated, structured, and routed into password remediation without a separate analyst-led handoff. The remaining human activity is reviewing the Slack notification and handling any issues that require security judgment.

Work removed

Launching recurring domain scans, reviewing breach results individually, extracting breach metadata, generating replacement passwords, updating affected directory accounts, forcing password changes, and composing breach notifications for the security team.

Expected outcome

A conservative expectation is to eliminate at least one manual scan and notification cycle for each scheduled run that produces findings, while initiating password remediation for each processed affected account.
